Description of the picture:
Nana – Eduard Manet. 1877. Oil on canvas. 150×116 cm
Often the majestic impressionist Eduard Manet shocked the audience with his work. And with the scandalous glory of his famous “Breakfast on the Grass” and “Olympia”, perhaps only his more popular “Nana” can compete. The painting was created in 1877, and the famous Parisian cocotte Henrietta Hauser, the mistress of Tsarevich Oransky, served as a model for it.
In the center of the canvas, in the middle of the room is a young lady. Her clothes (and this needs to be clarified for today’s viewer) are underwear since then: a white muslin shirt and over a blue corset. More than intimate!
Previously, artists portrayed naked goddesses and nymphs, but to look into the boudoir to a modern woman – no one dared to Mane before. Moreover, the artist went even further, depicting on the sofa an impressive man in a suit, a high top hat with a cane in his hands. There is no doubt that before us is a lady of half the world next to her patron. It is simply unheard of audacity to speak so frankly about the evils of a high society.
The color of the canvas is “assembled” from contrasts of cold and warm tones. The sparkling white skirt harmonizes with the blue corset and contrasts with the surroundings. The woman’s clothes are “in color” with a tapestry on the back wall, and the gentleman’s dark suit is balanced by Nana’s shoes and a stand for her mirror. This extraordinary skill of Manet – to harmoniously combine colors in the picture – led to the fact that the finished work seemed to shimmer in the sun, sparkle like a pearl.
It is worth saying that the Salon did not allow such a frank work for the exhibition. The event hurt the painter very much – he was seriously experiencing a failure, which provoked the renewal of pain in his leg. This disease, ultimately, will kill the master after five years."
