Description of the picture:
Lodge – Renoir. 1874. Oil on canvas. 80×64
One of Renoir’s masterpieces is the Lodge.. A slice of the box’s barrier resembling a photo frame introduces an element of spontaneity into the composition. The lady holds a lorgnette in one hand, which practically connects with velvet upholstery, and in the other a snow-white openwork shawl. She looks at the stage, but her thoughts are in some places far away. Her companion with binoculars examines the audience on the balcony. The painting feels the artist’s joyful delight as a “celebration of life”. The black color, so important in this work, Renoir called “the king of colors.” Contrasting shades of black and white is the artist’s coloristic find."
